A Directory Built by Someone Who Has to Live With Being Wrong
LowellBusiness.com has listed businesses serving Lowell, Massachusetts and the Merrimack Valley since 2012. This page explains who runs it, how listings are checked, what that checking does and does not cover, and how to correct something we got wrong.
In short
This is a hand-checked directory of businesses serving Lowell and the surrounding Merrimack Valley. A person reviews every submission before it publishes. Listings are paid, from $99 for twelve months. Review confirms that a business is real, reachable and correctly categorised — it is not an inspection, an endorsement, or a check of licensing or workmanship.
Why this exists
Small businesses along Merrimack Street, Jackson Street and the Acre needed somewhere to be found without being buried under national franchise listings. That was the reason in 2012 and it is still the reason. National directories are built to work in any city, which means they work in none of them particularly well: the categories are generic, the coverage is bought rather than earned, and the local knowledge that would make them useful is exactly what gets stripped out to make them scale.
Lowell carries a business mix that does not fit a generic category list. Mill buildings that once held looms now hold design studios, law offices, workshops and small manufacturers. UMass Lowell and Middlesex Community College move thousands of people through the city. Cambodian, Latino and Portuguese-owned businesses operate alongside long-established New England shops. A directory that flattens all of that into “Services” and “Retail” is not describing this city.
How listings are reviewed
Every submission is looked at by a person before it appears. Review means three specific things, and it is worth being precise about them because the word “verified” is used very loosely across this industry.
- The business genuinely serves this area
It operates in, or travels to, Lowell and the surrounding Merrimack Valley. A mobile notary based in Tewksbury who regularly drives to Lowell belongs here. A business with no connection to the area does not, however well written the submission.
- The contact details work
The address resolves to a real location and the phone number and website are current at the time of review. A listing whose details have gone stale since is a listing we have not caught yet, which is why the correction route below matters.
- The categories match the actual services
A business is placed in the categories describing what it does, not the categories that attract the most search traffic. This is the rule that most often gets a submission edited before publishing.
What review does not cover
This section exists because the gap between what a directory checks and what readers assume it checks is where people get hurt.
A listing here is not any of the following
- Not a licence check. Electricians, plumbers, contractors, notaries and insurance producers are licensed in Massachusetts. We do not verify those licences. You can, through the relevant state board, and you should.
- Not an insurance check. Ask any provider working on your property or handling your records for a certificate of insurance, and ask for the insurer’s name.
- Not a quality judgement. Nothing here reflects workmanship, pricing or how a business handles a complaint.
- Not an endorsement. Appearing in this directory means a business is real and correctly filed. It does not mean it is recommended.
- Not permanently accurate. Businesses close, move and change numbers. Details are correct when reviewed, not forever.
The directory guide sets out the ten-minute check worth running on any provider before you commit money to them. It is short, and it is the part of the process that is genuinely yours.
What is actually in the directory
Coverage is uneven, and pretending otherwise would undermine the point of the previous section. The directory currently holds 81 published listings across 23 categories that contain at least one business.
It is deepest in business and document services: notaries, apostille and authentication, document shredding, shipping, mail forwarding and translation. That reflects where it grew from rather than any claim about the shape of Lowell’s economy. Several categories — restaurants, retail, trades, healthcare — hold very few listings or none at all. Those gaps are real, they are visible on the category tables, and the only thing that closes them is businesses adding themselves.
If your category looks empty, that is the invitation
Listing starts at $99 for twelve months and takes a few minutes to set up. Add your business, or tell us what is missing if you would rather point us at someone else’s.
How it is paid for
Every listing is paid, starting at $99 for a twelve-month entry. There is no free tier and no advertising on the site, so listing fees are what fund the review process. Nothing renews automatically.
Higher tiers add featured placement, customer reviews and multiple listings. The site is operated by someone who also runs business-service companies in the Merrimack Valley — several of which appear in this directory alongside everyone else. That is worth stating plainly rather than leaving for a reader to work out: the operator has listings here, they are subject to the same review as any other, and they receive no ranking preference within category pages.
Corrections and removals
Directory data decays. A phone number that worked in March may not work in September, and a business that closed quietly leaves no signal.
If you find a listing with a dead number, a wrong address or a business that no longer trades, the contact form is the fastest route. Corrections from customers are as welcome as corrections from owners — you do not need to own a business to report that its listing is wrong, and reports from the public are frequently the first indication that something has changed.
Business owners can request edits or removal of their own listing at any time, without explanation.
Contact
Use the contact form for corrections, listing questions, removals or anything else about the directory. If you are writing about a specific listing, include the listing name or its address so it can be found quickly.
